Rorschach Family is has a deeply philosophical and existential quality—almost like a visual thought experiment on the fragility of existence. The art series that examines time, history, and the role of individuals within it. Inspired by Rorschach tests, the works alter old photographs by removing one person, inviting viewers to reflect on how history might have changed had that person never existed. The connection to Rorschach tests implies that meaning is projected by the viewer, much like how history itself is interpreted rather than fixed. This concept extends beyond the artist’s family, incorporating found photographs of strangers to explore the collective impact of individual absence. It It’s not just about personal memory but also about the interconnectedness of individuals and how even small absences can ripple across time linking this to the “butterfly effect” in chaos theory.
The project also draws from childhood “spot the difference” games, highlighting subtle shifts in perception and memory.
The series originates from a personal experience: as the artist’s grandfather fell ill and lost his ability to speak, they realized their inability to understand his written Chinese. This disconnection sparked an urgent need to reconnect with their Taiwanese-Chinese heritage, leading them to investigate their ancestral lineage through art. The project thus serves as both an exploration of history and a personal act of reconciliation with a past that was once rejected.
