The myth of the Sphinx in Oedipus was always very fascinating to me, this creature with the head of a woman, the haunches of a lion, and the wings of a bird, creating terror in Thebes. She challenges those who encounter her to answer a riddle, and kills and eats them when they fail to solve the riddle: "What walks on four feet in the morning, two in the afternoon and three at night?". Oedipus answered: "Man: as an infant, he crawls on all fours; as an adult, he walks on two legs and; in old age, he uses a walking stick". Oedipus was the first to answer the riddle correctly and, having heard Oedipus' answer, the Sphinx was astounded and killed herself by throwing herself into the sea.
I was fascinated by the power of this creature, and I felt that as an artist my relationship with my audience was similar of the one between Oedipus and The Sphinx. I felt that I was a similar creature to her: of power and vulnerability combine at once.
This work was done while I was a student at the Atelier de Glacière in Paris in 2006.
