Dream of Birth is an ongoing art series that began in 2006, exploring the liminal space between existence and non-existence—particularly the threshold between being in the womb and birth. The series began with a self-portrait of the artist submerged in a bath of milk, symbolizing the fluid, organic environment of the placenta. The black-and-white photographs often feature closed-eyed women in dream-like, sensual postures, reinforcing the idea of a suspended, in-between state.
Aesthetically, the works incorporate digital layering with marbled paper textures, evoking the natural patterns of organic matter and the womb’s interior. The series later expanded to compositions featuring three women, referencing the mythological figures of the Three Graces and the Muses, linking themes of birth and inspiration.
A later variation introduced a “black” series, where the women are immersed in Chinese ink instead of milk. This transformation shifts the exploration from birth to death—framing both as passageways between worlds. The work also draws on the aesthetics of classical Renaissance and Greek sculpture, as well as Pre-Raphaelite and Romantic painting, celebrating the timeless beauty of the nude body.
In the video art piece there is an interplay of human bodies with celestial imagery and cell division bridges the personal and the universal—birth not just as an individual event but as something deeply interconnected with the cosmos.
